Testing & improving solutions

Try a possible solution, observe what happens and use the result to improve it.

Why it matters

Trying an approach shows how it works in practice. Examining the results against the problem it was meant to address gives you a reason to keep, change or replace it.

What this can look like

  • tries a possible solution and notices what happens
  • compares the result with the problem being addressed
  • changes an approach in response to the result

Youth relevance

In a group project or community initiative, an approach may work differently from what was expected. Young people can use observations and feedback from a trial to decide what to adjust.

Ways young people can practise this skill

  • try a possible solution to a difficulty in shared work and review the result
  • adjust a proposed solution using observations or feedback from people who tried it
  • compare the results of a revised approach with an earlier attempt
