Critical & responsible use of AI
Use AI with human judgement: check its outputs and limitations, and decide when its use is appropriate.
Why it matters
AI outputs may contain errors, bias or material that does not fit the task. Deciding whether to use AI involves checking what it produces, recognising its limits and considering what information would be shared.
What this can look like
- checks an AI-generated answer against reliable information
- identifies possible errors or bias in an AI output
- decides whether AI use fits the task and context, including any privacy concerns
Youth relevance
When AI is considered for school or college work, research or drafting a message, young people need to judge what is suitable to use. This includes checking outputs, considering the rules of the task and deciding what information is appropriate to enter.
Ways young people can practise this skill
- compare an AI-generated answer with reliable sources and identify what needs checking
- review an AI-generated draft for possible bias and suitability for its audience
- consider whether AI use is appropriate for a task, including its rules and any personal information involved
